Netherlands: online continues to grow

thursday 26 october, 2006

According to a study of Blauw Research in cooperation with Thuiswinkel Dutch online sales grew 25% in the first 6 months of 2006 to reach 1,33 billion euro.

Online grows substiantally faster than traditional retail (+62%) and the part of online distance selling is now 3.3% compared to 2.8 in 2006. Average sales are at the level of 259 euro (was €243 in 2006), due to an increase of the more expensive sectors, like travel, consumerelectronics, home appliances and insurances.

More internet shoppers are increasingly confident about the security of payments: 55% compared to 43% last year. The introduction of iDeal has largely contributed to this confidence. Also the quantity of webshops is rapidly increasing: Office of Statistics estimated in June 3.200, but according to Thuiswinkel this number is in reality over 10.000.

Sales in million euro over the years:
2000: €312
2004: €1.678
2005: €2.210
2006: €1.330 (first semester)
