Nearly a billion mobile phones were sold worldwide in 2006, according to Gartner.
The 990.8 million phones sold represented a 21.3% increase from 2005. The top six phone makers accounted for 86% of all sales, which was 5% more than in 2005.
In a clear reference to Apple's iPhone, Carolina Milanesi of Gartner said that "2007 will bring new players from other industries entering and adding some spice to an already very highly competitive market."
Even with an expected drop in growth, mobile phone sales are estimated to reach 1.2 billion worldwide this year.
